manga nowadays
When I'm not distracted by other things (school, anime, org activities), I very loyally wait for shounen manga updates. But then every so often, other genres catch my attention, like when the art style is too cute to pass up, or there's something about the summary that just makes you want to see what it's all about.

Hence, one fine day, after reading updates of One Piece, KHR, and Kurobasu, I found myself looking through summaries for something fresh and interesting. This is how I came upon Ao Haru Ride (Blue Spring Ride) by Sakisaka Io.

From mangaupdates:

Yoshioka Futaba has a few reasons why she wants to "reset" her image and life as a new high-school student. Because she's cute, she was ostracized by her female friends in junior high, and because of a misunderstanding, she couldn't get her feeling across to the one boy she has always liked, Tanaka-kun.

Now in high school, she is determined to be as unladylike as possible so that her friends won't be jealous of her. While living her life this way contentedly, she meets Tanaka-kun again, but he now goes under the name of Mabuchi Kou. He tells her that he felt the same way as she did when they were younger, but now things can never be the same again. Will Futaba be able to continue her love that never even started from three years ago?

I started reading it: first, because the cover is really cute; and second, I've come across shoujo manga with tomboyish main characters, and I kind of wondered how this one would be different. Also, I wanted to see how, "Will Futaba be able to continue her love that hadn't even started from three years ago?" will turn out.

Honestly, I did think it would be interesting, but never expected to actually love the story, you know? But I do, and right now, updates cannot possibly come quickly enough to satisfy me.

Kou and Futaba (and all the major characters, really) are so, so lovable, even when you want to bash their heads in--this holds especially true for Kou, who "no longer likes" Futaba (my ass). Still, if they simply kickstart a relationship right after their reunion, it wouldn't be as interesting. Good job, Kou.

After three years of separation, the two of them meet again in high school. In this same school, Futaba encounters a teacher that looks surprisingly similar and even has the same surname as her beloved Tanaka-kun. Sadly, Tanaka-sensei and Kou don't have a very good relationship, with the younger sibling doing his very best to avoid the older one. However!

(AKLDSF KOU BEING AN ADORABLE LITTLE KID, HIS TO-LE-RATE FACE JUST... my heart went kyu~n for a bit, is all) They got along well in the past, didn't they? And so the reason for their present rocky relationship is another mystery from Kou's past that needs to be solved.

Oh my, Futaba-chan, how lewd!

Although Yuuri is normally such a sweet girl, seeing this transformation is a bit... well, it doesn't bode will for Kominato, does it?

I had hoped for a kiss, but this is also good. Kou and Futaba have a lot of little squabbles (in preparation for actual lovers' spats, I assume), but then, in the fashion of the Golden Pair...

Their Synchro is topnotch.

For someone who's no longer in love with Futaba, Kou is really persistent at cockblocking other guys (who aren't even after Futaba, but like, whatever, because love is blind, even though he's not in love okaaaay).

Kominato... I have no words.

And finally, the straw that breaks the camel's back!

Or should I say, the turning point of Kou's personality? Or something like that. For this page, I think waiting 13 chapters for Kou to open up is woooorth it. =A= The manga scanlations are up to chapter 16 right now, and it's NOT ENOUGH.

SAKISAKA-SENSEI, SCANLATORS, PLEASE QUICKLY UPDATE. Even though there are scans and translations, if it's not a scanlation, I can't really be bothered to read it...

Besides Ao Haru Ride, other Sakisaka Io works are definitely recommended. I really love Strobe Edge--it's main selling point is that it's already complete.

I'm also following Aozora Yell. It's... how should I say this... kind of mellow? Though it doesn't lose in terms of denial.

For now, Daisuke. For now.

But for all the frustration this manga gives me, at least there are still moments that make me think: "YES! THERE IS PROGRESS!" Even though it's not the kind of progress that I want...

Why must you ruin everything, Daisuke?!

Sigh. At least I still have Kurobasu.

Ah. You got me to start reading Ao Haru Ride. The art is really cute. I've read Strobe Edge too, but I found it somewhat frustrating at many points.

That's a very good ending point, you make.

Yes, Strobe Edge does get frustrating. Those two main characters... /CRUMPLES PAPER
But they're also really cute! Esp. that part where Ren says he's impure, when everyone and their brother who can read his face (or his thoughts) are blinded by his purity.

Speaking of manga with cute art, behold: Cello Mellow and Chiguhagu Planet. When I read them, this feeling suddenly emerges, the feeling of wanting to squeeze the life out of something... because of the cuteness.

Unfortunately I preferred the girl with...the other guy who liked her. The tall one with the lighter hair. Alas, I knew they'd never get together. Haha, Ren was so innocent, almost like Kagami. Still, kind of like shojo hero type #2. (Tanaka-kun used to be type #2, but then his tragic past turned him into type #1!)

Oh, those were really cute and pretty. But where are the updates for Chiguhagu Planet? And why did Cello Mellow no other manga? That's...not the destiny I wanted.

Hm... yes, I suppose you're right. (Then again, we may not be talking about the same type, so maybe not.)
I like that other guy too! But you know how love is, so uncontrollable, like a tsunami.

I have no idea where the updates are. D: We have to wait patiently! As for Cello Mellow... no idea. The first thing I did after reading was click on the author's name, and NOTHING! Absolutely nothing. ;_; I thought the style was kind of familiar, but since mangafox has no other works to display, I must have imagined it.
